THE ARTIST SUIT
Artist Santa GAÏA Pilens in the Artist Suit

In the diptych "The Artist Suit," GAÏA engages in a profound exploration of identity and societal expectations. The intentional choice of a suit, traditionally male attire, worn by a woman challenges entrenched gender norms and signifies empowerment. The deliberate deconstruction and reconstruction of the intricate garment symbolise a cyclical journey of nothingness and renewal.

This narrative expands as GAÏA collaborates with the fashion brand Pixie, crafting a wearable two-piece artist statement suit in black with olive green layering—a nod to nature. GAÏA's poem incorporated as a label serves as a constant reminder for the wearer to discover confidence, strength, and love within oneself.

GAÏA views the suit not just as clothing but as a wearable art piece. It blurs the boundaries between traditional artwork and fashion, offering the possibility of adorning both walls and individuals as walking artworks. The intersection of fashion and art in this collaborative creation further underscores GAÏA's exploration of identity and self-expression.

Q&A

Your exploration of identity and societal expectations through the symbolism of the suit is quite profound. Can you share with us the inspiration behind this series?

The inspiration behind "The Artist Suit" stems from my fascination with the intersection of art and fashion, and how both mediums can be used to challenge and redefine societal norms. I wanted to delve into the symbolism of the suit as a garment traditionally associated with masculinity and power, and explore what it means when worn by a woman. It's a visual statement of empowerment and defiance against gender stereotypes.

The collaboration with Pixie resulted in wearable art pieces that extend the narrative of your diptych. Can you tell us about the process of working with the fashion brand and how it complemented your artistic vision?

Collaborating with Pixie was an incredibly enriching experience. We wanted to create wearable pieces that not only reflected the themes of my artwork but also served as vehicles for self-expression and empowerment for the wearer. Together, we meticulously designed each garment, incorporating elements of nature and symbolism to evoke a sense of connection and resonance with the audience.

The incorporation of a poem as a label in the artist statement suit adds another layer of depth to your work. Can you elaborate on the significance of this poetic element and how it contributes to the overall narrative?

The poem serves as a guiding mantra, encouraging the wearer to embrace confidence, strength, and love within themselves. It's a reminder of the transformative journey depicted in the artwork—of deconstruction, renewal, and self-discovery. By infusing poetry into the garment, I aimed to blur the boundaries between visual art and literature, inviting the audience to engage with the piece on a more introspective level.

Your exploration of gender norms and empowerment through the symbolism of the suit resonates deeply with the legacy of female artists who challenged societal expectations. How do you see your work contributing to this ongoing dialogue within the art world?

The diptych and collab ''The Artist Suit'' I see as a continuation of the legacy of those trailblazing artists, like Frida Kahlo and Georgia O'Keeffee who dared to defy conventions and assert their presence in a male-dominated art world. By reclaiming and reinterpreting symbols of power and identity, such as the suit, I hope to inspire others to embrace their own narratives of empowerment and self-expression, regardless of gender or societal expectations.

An artistic philosophy of exploring duality and the interplay of opposing forces is beautifully expressed in your use of black and white in "The Artist Suit." How do you envision viewers engaging with this symbolism, both visually and conceptually?

The juxtaposition of black and white in my work symbolizes the cosmic dance of dualities—life and death, creation and destruction. I hope viewers will not only appreciate the visual contrast but also contemplate the deeper metaphysical concepts it represents. By inviting them to explore the interconnectedness of opposing forces, I aim to spark a dialogue about the inherent unity and transformative potential within us all.
